Location search

Every job location is normalized to City, Region, Country in locations_derived, e.g. Montréal, Quebec, Canada or Austin, Texas, United States. A location known only to the province or state has no city: Ontario, Canada. The location parameter searches these places.

Writing a location

You writeMatchesNotes
CanadaCountryEvery job in the Canadian view.
United StatesCountryEvery job in the US view. United States of America and USA also work.
Ontario, CanadaRegionJobs in Ontario, including province-wide ones. Full names; Quebec and Québec are both fine.
New York, United StatesRegionThe state of New York (add a city to mean the city).
Toronto, Ontario, CanadaCityJobs in Toronto.
Toronto, ONCityA region code is accepted after a city.
TorontoAnyA single name matches a region or a city with that name in either country.

Combine places with OR, quoting each one so its commas stay together:

"Toronto, Ontario, Canada" OR "Ottawa, Ontario, Canada" OR "Quebec, Canada"

Things to know

  • Spell out countries. US and CA alone are not countries; CA is California only after a city (Los Angeles, CA).
  • Add the region or country to a city. London alone matches London, Ontario and any US city named London; London, Ontario doesn't.
  • A single name can mean two places. Ontario matches the province and the city of Ontario, California; add the country to choose.
  • French and English names of Canadian cities and provinces both resolve, and accents are optional: Montreal finds Montréal.
  • Places outside Canada and the US match nothing; those jobs are not in either country view.
  • A posting with locations in both countries is in both views, once in each, with different ids. Filter with country if you only want one.

Boolean location search

location_advanced searches the words of each derived location with the advanced syntax, e.g. (toronto | ottawa) & !kingston or 'nova scotia'. It reads every location row, so it is slower than location on large windows.

Remote jobs

Remote jobs still carry the locations the employer published (often a country or region they hire in). Use remote=true to select them; location_type is TELECOMMUTE and work_arrangement is remote.
